The role of artificial intelligence in promoting fairness and transparency in athlete selection: A thematic review

Abstract
Athlete selection and talent identification
(TID) in elite sports are undergoing a paradigm shift from traditional
subjective human evaluations to objective, data-driven systems powered by
artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). This thematic review
paper provides a comprehensive, critical synthesis of the current literature
(2020–2026) surrounding the integration of AI in sports selection systems. By
analyzing key peer-reviewed studies and official project guidelines, this paper
systematically explores: (1) the limitations of conventional scouting including
relative age effects (RAE), maturity-selection bias, and cognitive heuristics;
(2) state-of-the-art computational approaches, such as the Split-Combine-Merge
Deep Learning (SCM-DL) model, LightGBM classification with SHAP
interpretability, and Bayesian pattern recognition; (3) the ethical tensions
between algorithmic fairness, data privacy (GDPR/HIPAA compliance), and athlete
rights; and (4) human-AI collaboration. Furthermore, this review addresses the
applied sports context of India, specifically examining the technological
framework of the Khelo India Rising Talent Identification (KIRTI) initiative,
alongside empirical machine learning research in Indian volleyball and cricket.
We propose a holistic conceptual framework of an ethically aligned, transparent
AI-assisted athlete selection pipeline that integrates data analytics,
explainability, fairness audits, and qualitative human expertise. This review
underscores that while AI can significantly enhance standardization,
consistency, and analytical efficiency, it is not an automated guarantor of
fairness. Responsible deployment requires continuous auditing of training
datasets, explainable models, and strict human oversight to prevent the
replication of historical biases and safeguard athlete welfare.
