Abstract
This study examined the combined role of anthropometric characteristics and psychological attributes in shaping batting performance among cricket players. In the anthropometric component, twenty-five male cricketers (age 17–28 years; 19.16 ± 1.37 years) were drawn through random sampling from cricket academies, practice matches and camps in Haryana, and nineteen predictor variables — age, height, body weight, full arm length, hand length, full leg length, chest, abdomen and hip girths, humerus bicondylar diameter, wrist diameter, biceps, triceps, chest, calf and thigh skinfolds, BMI and fat percentage — were recorded. In the psychological component, fifty male cricketers (19.08 ± 1.22 years) from cricket academies, practice matches and camps in Haryana and Delhi were assessed on achievement motivation (SAMT, Kamlesh, 1990), self-confidence (ASCI, Agnihotri, 1987) and aggression (Smith, 1979). Batting performance was rated by three experienced coaches on a 10-point scale and averaged. Descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation and stepwise multiple regression were used, with significance fixed at 0.05. Results showed that age, chest skinfold and thigh skinfold emerged as the only significant anthropometric predictors of batting performance, jointly explaining 55.7% of the variance, while achievement motivation (r = .407, p < .05) and self-confidence (r = .346, p < .05) showed a significant positive relationship with batting performance; aggression (r = –.008, p > .05) did not. The findings suggest that batting excellence in cricket rests on twin pillars — an athlete’s physical build and their psychological make-up — and that both dimensions merit attention in talent identification and training programmes.
